Television is a medium of information shown by audio-visual. It gives information such as news, film, entertainment, advertisemen, and also education. Some people say that children can learn more efficiently by watching television. However, this is difficult to be agreed because of two reasons, which are addiction and education.

SAMPLE TASK 2 (ESSAY) : CHILDREN AND TELEVISION

COMMON MISTAKES IN TASK 2
Some students-including me-often write task 2 with common mistakes. These common mistakes may reduce band, even examiner will not accept it. Please pay attention carefully on some points bellow:
1. Agreement between subject and verb, or subject pronoun with its verb
For example:
Nowadays, television take an important role to set up people mindset
"television" is singular, it should be followed by verb+s "takes"
They has opportunities to study abroad
"they" is plural noun, so verb should be "have"
2. Using "I agree", "I disagree"
Maybe some teachers or examiner can accept this. However, you must know that some examiner cannot accept this because they consider your writing is academic writing, so you should not use pronoun "I". Even though you would like to deliver your own opinion as stand statement. Please just write thesis statement, because it is considered as stand statement and reflects your opinion.
3. Using of abbreviations
In academic writing, once again, please do not use abbreviations such as "don't", "doesn't", "haven't", "won't". Please write "do not", "does not", "have not", "will not."
4. Modal + verb structure
Students have to know (right)
Students must know (right)
Students must have to know (wrong)
Students must to know (wrong)
5. Different between "Its" and "It's"
The word "its" is a possesion pronoun from it, and the word "it's" is actually "it is".
6. Effect and Affect, Two/too/to, then and than
Please distinguish between effect and affect.
effect is noun, while affect is verb.
So, distiguish and be carefull with word "two, too, and to", "then, and than", and so "of and off"
7. Numbers
Number from 1-10, you should spell it. For example, this is because two reasons.
Except of percentage. For example: 9% of people immigrate to America with definite job reason.
Number from 11 and above, you should write the number. For example: Students should bring 20 papers in examination day.
Any questions, please comment :)
THESIS STATEMENT IN TASK 2
By: Ain Nurwindasari
If you would like to write task 2, you will familiar with this phrase "thesis statement". Thesis statement is very important to build essay. Why it is important? Because from thesis statement you begin to expand your idea. So, what is thesis statement?
Thesis statement is statement that consists of topic and two main ideas. It should be located in the first paragraph of essay writing.
For example, you get topic "Our modern lifestyle makes it difficult for us to stay fit and healthy"
If you agree with topic, you may have two main ideas which are:
1. Modern lifestyle makes people lazy
2. Modern lifestyle has some dangerous effeects
So, your thesis statement will be:
Our modern lifestyle makes it difficult for us to stay fit and healthy, because of lazyness and its dangerous effects.
Then, you can expand your two ideas from your thesis statement to each of next paragraph. For instance, first idea (modern lifestyle makes people lazy) you put it in the body paragraph 1, and second idea (modern lifestyle has some dangerous effects) you put it in second body paragraph (paragraph 3).
Is it clear about thesis statement? Any questions please deliver in this comment below.

SAMPLE TASK 2 (ESSAY) : OUR MODERN LIFESTYLE
By: Ain Nurwindasari
Topic: Our modern lifestyle makes it difficult for us to stay fit and healthy. What is your opinion?
Lifestyle changes from era to era. People think of how to live life easier, so they create technology to help others to live easily. Nowadays, people live with modern lifestyle. However, they have to know that modern lifestyle makes it difficult for them to stay fir and healthy. This is because modern lifestyle makes people lazy and it has some dangerous effects.
Firstly, modern lifestyle makes people lazy. Many people have cars for commuting to their work place. They prefer to commute from a place to another by car or motorcycle rather than by walking or riding bicycles, even the distance is near. They also prefer to eat in restaurants rather than cooking on their own, even when they have time. These examples above makes people move minimally and they could grow extremely lazy. In fact, the body needs to be moved to shed off fat and avoid osteophorosis of the bone.
Secondly, modern lifestyle has some dangerous effects. For example, a millions of cars that we use for commuting will produce air pollutions. Of course this pollution is unhealthy for our body. As we know, everyday the number of cars are increasing sharply in the developing countries, so those will produce more pollution in the world. Besides that, we consume chemical products that will harm our body without our knowledge and awareness. This is different with our traditional lifestyle when they make and consume product without chemicals, so they stay fit and healthy for a long time.
In summary, people have to start to be aware with positive and negative impacts of modern lifestyle. This does not mean that people have to leave modern lifestyle at all and go back to traditional lifestyle. However, thinking smart to live wisely and carefully with modern technology is certainly needed. Modern lifestyle makes us easier, but do not forget to save your body from its impacts.

WELCOME TO EPT AND APT
By: Ain Nurwindasari
What is EPT?
EPT is English placement test. Before you study in IIUM, you should know that you have to obtain the minimum score of english test. If you have had english score such as from TOEFL or IELTS, you may show your certificate to IIUM staff admission and you might not take EPT in IIUM. However, if you don't have score yet, you have to take EPT after enrolment day. The score required is depending on your course. Both candidate of undergraduate and postgraduate are required to pass EPT.
Usually, for EPT all is required to obtain minimum band 6, except for students who will not take english course. For example, students of qur'an and sunnah departement who take only qur'anic course and they have to sign and make official statement to the deputy that they will not take english course and only take qur'anic course. These students have to obtain only band 3 for english. However, it is very little. Most students want to take both english and arabic course.
Furthermore, it is impossible to only speak arabic in campus because most international students are speaking english. So, better you prepare your english well.
APT (Arabic Placement Test), is similar with EPT. All of candidate undergraduate students are required to pass this placement test. However, candidate of postgraduate students are not required to pass APT, except they who take course in arabic course or IRK (Islamic Revelead Knowedge) faculty. Like me, for instance, I take qur'an and sunnah course, and the departement require me to obtain band 7 in arabic.
Besides that, there is Tilawah Placement Test for all candidate of postgraduate students.
That is all, if you have any questions, please don't be hasitate to ask me.
